FTH’s Commitment to Global Technology Standards

In today’s hyper connected world, seamless digital experiences – from cloud based services to encrypted communications and satellite navigation – are powered by something often invisible to users: technology standards. Underpinning key aspects of telecommunications systems – interoperability, trust, and reliability.

At the heart of these global networks is a dynamic ecosystem where research meets real world application. And at FTH, we’re proud to play a leading role in that process.

Standardisation: The Bridge Between Innovation and Impact

We connect the UK’s brightest academic minds with the practical needs of the telecommunications industry. Drawing on cutting edge research from the top 25 UK institutions, our mission is to move innovation from the lab into everyday use. Standardisation is a key part of that journey.

International Standards Development Organisations (SDOs) like IEEE, 3GPP, O-RAN and ETSI are where tomorrow’s technologies are assessed and integrated into the connectivity of the future. Through strategic involvement in these bodies, we ensure the UK’s scientific and engineering breakthroughs align with and influence global standards.

Leading the Charge: A Dedicated Standardisation Director

Driving this initiative forward is our dedicated Standardisation Director, Dr Nikola Serafimovski, who brings deep industry expertise and vision to this critical role. His leadership ensures that FTH is not only participating in global conversations but actively shaping them.

Our Standardisation Director works closely with researchers to understand how their innovations map to emerging industry needs. By identifying strategic opportunities for engagement within SDOs, he helps help steer UK research towards maximum impact.

Connecting Researchers and Industry

At FTH, we do more than promote academic research, we create a two way conversation. We offer industry stakeholders a window into the latest technological advances and support them in bringing solutions into the standards ecosystem.

This collaboration also unlocks new opportunities for researchers, providing pathways for research commercialisation and amplifying the societal impact of their work.

Why It Matters

Standardisation is more than a technical requirement; it’s a catalyst for driving digital transformation. It enables technologies to scale, ensures systems work together seamlessly, and fosters consumer confidence across borders. By engaging in this space, we at FTH are helping shape the infrastructure of our digital future.
